How UGV can amplify female voices

#InternationalWomensDay is an opportunity to raise awareness and celebrate the accomplishments of women around the world. In our experience, UGV has a huge role to play in amplifying female voices from all backgrounds 👩‍🎤 As part of this year’s #ChooseToChallenge theme, we invited our community to share with us their female idols and how they inspire them to fight for gender equality.

The 8th of March marks International Women’s Day. It’s one of the most important days of the year to spread awareness and recognise the accomplishments of women around the world.  In the UK, we’ll be celebrating this year’s IWD in lockdown - but that doesn’t mean the fight for equality will take a back seat. If anything, it’s more important than ever to show solidarity and be part of the conversation.

While we’re all at home, user-generated video is the perfect medium to amplify voices of women from all backgrounds. Not only that, but UGV can serve as a reminder that we’re all in this fight together - whether you’re a working mum, a recent graduate or a female founder of a flourishing start up.

It’s also an opportunity to promote feminism among all people - not just women, but everyone, no matter their gender identity. The broader the conversation, the further the message spreads.

Celebrating women in tech

Virtually all women have dealt with inequality in the workplace.  In the tech sector, female representation has always been historically low, with only 19% of all roles in tech being made up by women. At Seenit, we’re always looking for ways to challenge this imbalance, because we believe the contribution of women enriches the industry with invaluable perspectives.

Last year, we produced a crowdsourced user-generated video project to showcase some of the amazing women who work at Seenit. The purpose was to encourage more women to join our growing team and devote their skills to our mission. One of our core values is to champion voices and people, and through the power of video, we succeeded in capturing the opinions and experiences of women at every level of the business.

UGV as a tool for promoting feminism

Feminism is about making women stronger and empowering more of us to speak up. As you saw in the above video, we used UGV to encourage more female participation in the tech sector. But that’s just one example of how this medium can be used to inspire positive change. From recruitment to internal comms and marketing, UGV packs so much potential for companies to share impactful stories around female empowerment.

Every year, we ask our community to take part in our collaborative video projects for International Women’s Day. Last year, the theme was #EachForEqual, so we decided to ask members of our community why this topic resonated with them. The outcome was a symphony of voices from people of varying age, race, gender and job role. The conversation touched on everything from the removal of unconscious bias and the pursuit of gender equality in boardrooms to creating equal opportunities and removing the gender paygap.

On a whole, it served to prove the power of storytelling in lifting up the voices of women and increasing visibility on such important issues.

What #ChooseToChallenge means to us

Already, we have come so far in changing people’s perceptions. But the fight for a more gender-equal world is far from won. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge: individually, we can all choose to call out inequality when we see it.

So, for our video project, we’re celebrating the trailblazing female icons that have inspired us to raise awareness of bias and take action for equality.

Collectively, we can all play a role in pushing harder against the glass ceiling. Pledging to speak up with confidence, as so many women have done in the past, is the only way we can challenge the status quo and create a more inclusive world.

In 2021, we’re raising our hands high to show solidarity, and you can too.
